Olivia Rodrigo has said that she experienced a run-in with law enforcement during her Guts World Tour due to a case of mistaken identity.
The singer-songwriter has spent the past several months on her world tour, which has seen her play more than 90 shows since February in support of her album Guts. Her run of shows concluded in October.
While promoting the newly released Netflix film of her tour, Rodrigo, 21, made an appearance on NBC‘s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday. She shared with the host that her travels hit a bump when she reentered the U.S.
“I got in trouble with the law for the first time in my life,” Rodrigo told comedian Jimmy Fallon. “We were going from Canada to, like, Portland or something. We were at border control, I give them my passport, and they’re like, ‘OK, whatever.’ And they knock on the door and they’re like, ‘We need Olivia.'”
Assuming that she had been called back for other reasons, Rodrigo said: “I’m like, ‘I just played a few shows; maybe, like, their daughter wants an autograph.’ And I come out [at] 3 a.m. I’m delirious, and they take me to a room—and it’s an interrogation room, and there’s like, a big cop [with] a gun.
“He’s like, ‘Have you ever been arrested?’ I’m, like, ‘No, I haven’t been arrested,'” the star said of their conversation. “He’s like, ‘Are you sure?’ I’m like gaslighting [myself]. I’m, like, Oh, my God, maybe I was, like, arrested and I didn’t know it.
“He said, ‘You know, you could go to jail for lying to a federal officer like this. Like, this is really bad.'”
Sharing her emotions at the time, Rodrigo said: “I’m freaking out. I’m like, ‘I’m not gonna be let into America.’ Like, I’m so scared. I’m, like, having a panic attack.
“After 30 minutes’ interrogation, [the officer] looks at me and he goes, ‘What’s your name?’ [I said] ‘Olivia Rodrigo, like, R, O, D, R, I, G, O,’ And he’s, like, ‘Oh, there’s a girl who looks just like you, that’s your same age, that’s been arrested multiple times, and her name’s Olivia Rodriguez.’
“Jimmy, I was p*****,” the singer told Fallon. “I’m like, ‘You didn’t look at the name on the thing?'”
While Rodrigo expressed relief that it was a “crisis averted,” Fallon shared a tongue-in-cheek warning for the Olivia the officers wanted to question.
“Olivia Rodriguez, if you’re watching, be careful. That’s the moral of the story—be careful,” the Saturday Night Live alum said. “Stay away from Canada.”
Moments from Rodrigo’s tour have become viral talking points on social media over the past several months—including an onstage wardrobe malfunction in the U.K.
While performing her song “Love Is Embarrassing” in London back in May, her leather bra-top came undone at the back and almost fell off completely. A TikTok video captured the moment her top came apart. Rodrigo could be seen holding it in place while a backup dancer attempted to help.
Despite the malfunction, Rodrigo continued with the complex choreography, making it difficult for the dancer to fix her top. The dancer followed her around the stage, trying to assist as the singer danced through the mishap.
“This is f****** embarrassing,” Rodrigo laughed as she addressed the situation. After finishing the song, she ran offstage to fix her top, saying: “I almost flashed you guys, but it’s OK now!”
