What’s at stake in the Mets vs Braves games?
The Braves and Mets entered the doubleheader with 88-72 records on the season, with Atlanta in second place in the NL wild-card race and the Mets in third.
The Mets clinched a playoff berth with their win, which moved them to 89-72. The Braves fell to 88-73 with the loss.
The Diamondbacks ended the regular season with an 89-73 record.
If the Braves were to win Game 2 and split the two games with the Mets today, they would both get into the postseason, with the Braves as the No. 2 wild card and the Mets the No. 3 wild card because Atlanta would hold the tiebreaker over the Mets.
Arizona would miss the postseason.
If the Mets were to win both games today and sweep the doubleheader, the Diamondbacks would reach the postseason as the No. 3 wild-card seed, with the Mets getting the No. 2 wild-card berth. Atlanta would miss the postseason.
The Braves and the Mets hold the tiebreaker over the DBacks. So, the Diamondbacks have to finish with a better record than one of those teams to make the postseason. The only way they can do that now is for the Mets to win Game 2 against the Braves.
That would put New York at 90-72, Arizona at 89-73 and Atlanta at 88-74.
If the Braves won Game 2 of the doubleheader, it would put all three teams at 89-73, leaving Arizona out of the postseason because of tiebreakers (the DBacks lost the season series vs Braves and vs Mets).
