Bye weeks are usually welcomed during the football season. But, for Wisconsin, it was needed.
In addition to being pounded by No. 4 Alabama 42-10 two weeks ago, the Badgers lost quarterback Tyler Van Dyke for the season due to a torn ACL. Suddenly, backup quarterback Braedyn Locke is now QB1 on the depth chart.
Locke’s first start will be on the road in UW’s Big Ten opener at No. 13 USC on Saturday. The Trojans lost to No. 12 Michigan, 27-24, in Ann Arbor last week.

Mark Stewart: The Badgers were embarrassed by Alabama. That kick to the players’ pride plus an added week of preparation should lead to a spirited effort against the Trojans. But I still worry about UW’s ability to score. The unit hasn’t shown the ability to perform at a high enough level to win on the road. Add the wrinkle of a new quarterback making his first start of the season and the Badgers will have their hands full. USC 31, Wisconsin 10.
JR Radcliffe: The bye could not have arrived at a more perfect time for the Badgers, who turned the keys to the offense over to backup quarterback Braedyn Locke, with starter Tyler Van Dyke lost for the season. The USC defense looked legit against Michigan, though, so there won’t be any opportunity for Locke and Co. to ease into Big Ten play. The Trojans are, by essentially any measure, better than the Wisconsin Badgers. Call it optimistic intuition, but I don’t think we’re heading for a blowout; I think Wisconsin will make some badly needed plays and linger in this game before ultimately bowing out. USC 26, Wisconsin 18.
