PUNE: Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SCP) has approached the Supreme Court with a request to freeze the undivided NCP’s “clock” symbol till its case challenging the Election Commission of India’s decision to allot the party’s original name and symbol to the Ajit Pawar faction was pending before it.
NCP (SCP)’s working president Supriya Sule said her party had requested the court to allot a new symbol to Ajit Pawar’s party till the case was decided.Speaking to reporters in the city about NCP (SCP)’s request to the Supreme Court, Supriya said, “We have requested the court that till the time the case goes to its logical conclusion and till the time all the confusion ends, both factions should get new symbols. We have already got a new symbol. Similarly, the other side should be given a new symbol.”
NCP (SCP)’s request to the Supreme Court assumes political significance with the assembly polls likely to be held in November. The party contested the Lok Sabha elections on a new symbol, while Ajit Pawar’s NCP went to the hustings in summer with the clock symbol.
Supriya said, “We are hoping that the decision on our request will come early. We have faced injustice in the Lok Sabha polls, where there was confusion among voters over our party’s symbol. The next hearing of the case is on Wednesday.”
Sharad Pawar’s NCPC (SCP) has challenged the Election Commission of India (ECI)’s order in the Supreme Court after it allotted the original party name and the symbol to the Ajit Pawar faction following the split in NCP.
“Sharad Pawar is the founder member of NCP and it is his party. According to the party’s constitution, founder members and the president of the party have the authority to take party-related decisions. Unfortunately, the invisible power at the Centre sidelined that constitution and handed over the party name and the symbol to the other camp. Our party has gone to the court challenging it,” Supriya said.
