Reggaetón singer Nicky Jam is backing Donald Trump for president — but Trump was apparently under the mistaken impression that he was a “hot” woman.
At Trump’s campaign rally Friday in Las Vegas, the GOP presidential candidate announced the endorsement of “Latin music superstar Nicky Jam”: “Do you know Nicky? She’s hot!”
Trump, peering into the crowd, continued, “Where’s Nicky? Where’s Nicky? Thank you, Nicky. Great to be having you here.”
When the bestubbled Nicky Jam — wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat — emerged from the crowd onto the stage and shook Trump’s hand, Trump realized his error and said, “Oh look! Come here. I’m glad he came up.”
In his comments on stage, Nicky Jam said, “It’s an honor to meet you, Mr. President. People that come from where I come from, they don’t meet the president. So I’m lucky. We need you. We need you back, right? We need you to be the president.” Nicky Jam (real name Nick Rivera Caminero) was born in Massachusetts and moved to Puerto Rico with his family when he was a kid.
The Harris campaign pounced on Trump’s snafu in a post on X, pointing out that the 43-year-old singer is a man. Nicky Jam’s biggest hit is 2019’s “X,” which features J Balvin.
Other performers who have endorsed Trump’s candidacy include Jason Aldean, Kid Rock and Billy Ray Cyrus. Democrat VP Kamala Harris last week was endorsed by Taylor Swift, joining other artists in backing her including Ariana Grande, Cardi B, John Legend and Carole King.
After the rally, Nicky Jam laughed off Trump’s confusion about his gender, sharing a picture of the two of them in an Instagram post, writing in the caption, “Nicky jam la potra la bichota” (roughly, “Nicky Jam the hot woman the female boss”) followed by a string of 22 crying-laughing emoji.
