COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — The Columbus Blue Jackets are grieving one of their star players following a tragic accident.
The team announced on its X page Friday that forward Johnny Gaudreau and his brother died while riding bikes in New Jersey on Thursday.
New Jersey state troopers said they were struck by a man named Sean Higgins, who was driving an SUV after having drank “approximately 5-6 beers prior to the accident,” according to Higgins’ arrest report.
Johnny Gaudreau was 31 years old. The team’s announcement called him a loving husband and father to two children.
Johnny’s brother Matthew was 29 years old. He also was a hockey player.
It is believed that the brothers were in their New Jersey hometown for their sister’s wedding, which was set to take place Friday.
The National Hockey League family is shocked and saddened by the tragic passing of Columbus Blue Jackets forward Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew,” said the organization in a statement on their website. “While Johnny’s infectious spirit for the game and show-stopping skills on the ice earned him the nickname ‘Johnny Hockey,’ he was more than just a dazzling hockey player; he was a doting father and beloved husband, son, brother and teammate who endeared himself to every person fortunate enough to have crossed his path.”
New Jersey state police have released details on the crash that killed the two brothers.
Authorities say that the brothers were riding bicycles alongCounty Route 551 North in New Jersey, near the Pennsylvania border, when they were struck by 43-year-old Sean Higgins, who was driving an SUV.
After an investigation, Higgins was suspected by police of being under the influence of alcohol. He was charged with two counts of death by auto, and arrested. The crash remains under investigation.
