NEW DELHI: A 22-year-old woman has been apprehended for allegedly perpetrating the murder of her husband in southwest Delhi’s Uttam Nagar. While the man was killed on the night of Aug 17-18, the body was recovered by police on Tuesday.
Police identified the deceased as 33-year-old Sachin Rana and said his wife, Kavya, stabbed him in a fit of rage and slit his neck.
CCTV footage proved crucial for solving the case. Footage from Aug 17 shows Kavya coming down the stairs around 8pm after her husband returned from work. The landlord said, “Around 1am that day, we locked the main gate to the building. While we were asleep, Kavya arrived and woke us up, requesting that we open the gate because she needed to collect some medicines she had ordered for her husband. We complied and she went out and returned shortly afterwards.”
Around 4am, the CCTV footage shows, Kavya left the house again. This time, the video shows her checking to ensure no one is around before sneaking in a man who had his face and body covered in a sheet of cloth leading him to the first floor. The man can be seen leaving around 8am. Around an hour later, Kavya, well-dressed and with a large bag, leaves the building too.
On Aug 19, the landlord claimed that Kavya returned accompanied by two other individuals. She asserted that her husband had assaulted her the preceding day and she had brought these people for assistance. The group did not enter the house, which was locked from the outside, but lingered outside for a while before departing after some discussion.
Since Kavya had alleged domestic violence, the landlord decided to call Rana to discuss the matter. However, each time he called the man, he found the phone switched off.
On the morning of Aug 20, a tenant smelt a foul odour when doing her daily chores. She notified the landlord, who also detected the stench and observed that Rana’s house was locked. Suspecting something amiss, he summoned the cops. Upon investigation, police discovered Rana’s decomposed body in the last room of the house.
The deceased was employed as a home loan recovery agent in Janakpuri, while Kavya was a homemaker. The couple, both originally from Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh, had moved into the first-floor apartment in Oct last year after a love marriage. Other tenants in the building said that there were frequent arguments between the two in their apartment.
Police tracked down Kavya through technical surveillance and arrested her.
Ankit Singh, DCP (South West), said, “Rana was fatally stabbed, with wounds visible in his neck area. His body was swollen and was discovered approximately 48 hours after the murder. We are awaiting the post-mortem report.”
A case of murder has been registered under Section 103 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The cops are scrutinising the case by reviewing the sequence of events captured on CCTV footage and are interrogating Kavya. They are also endeavouring to identify any associates involved.
