RUDRAPUR: A 28-year-old man was arrested in Rajasthan on Wednesday for the allegedly raping and murdering a 33-year-old nurse who went missing from Rudrapur last month. The accused is a labourer who hails from Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly district.
Senior superintendent of police (SSP), Udham Singh Nagar, Manjunath TC, told TOI the nurse’s sister filed a complaint on July 31 at Rudrapur police station alleging she had gone missing.
Subsequently, four teams of city police and special operations group (SOG) officers were deployed. “Police put the woman’s mobile phone under surveillance and reviewed footage from over 500 CCTVs across the region,” said the SSP, adding, “On Aug 8, the missing woman’s skeletal remains were discovered near the road to Vasundhara Colony from Dibdiba.”
Using surveillance data, police launched a manhunt across Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan and finally arrested the 28-year-old.
During police interrogation, the accused confessed he raped the nurse in a secluded area on the night of July 31 before strangling her with her scarf and smashing her head using a brick. He fled the scene with Rs 3,000 in cash and her mobile phone.
“Police are currently investigating if the accused arrested has a criminal history,” said SSP Manjunath.
