KOLKATA: The autopsy report has indicated that the second-year PGT student of R G Kar Medical College and Hospital had put up a valiant fight against her attacker. Cuts were found on the woman’s hands and face, indicating she was forcibly held down. The autopsy report stated that the accused, Sanjay Roy, had beaten her up when she tried to resist him and protect herself, before raping and murdering her.
The victim was at first in deep sleep, which had gone in favour of the accused, but after the initial assault, she fought back. Injuries and scratches on Sanjay’s hands are evidence of the fight, the report stated. The woman’s glasses were found broken beside her laptop, indicating the fight lasted long enough for her to be able to twist and turn and shake off her attacker, at least for a while, said police. The doctor’s body bore injuries but no bone was found fractured, said the autopsy report. Her eyes bore blood clots from throttling. The accused reportedly covered the victim’s mouth hard and banged her head against the wall, which led to the injuries on her face. Her thyroid cartilage was, however, not fractured, as initially claimed, but it had blood clot, indicating the attacker had pressed it with full force to stop her from escaping. Sanjay’s nail marks on her face meant she tried to shout but was stopped, said an officer.
According to an officer, on the fateful night, after having dinner around 12 am, the junior doctor had handed over her responsibilities to her colleagues and gone to the seminar hall to study. Around 2 am, someone from the hospital had visited her at the seminar hall to discuss a patient’s treatment.
Around the same time, she had received a message on her mobile from a cousin, to which she had replied at 2:35 am, indicating everything was “normal” till then, said police. According to the officer, before 3 am, a hospital staff member went to the seminar hall to find the junior doctor lying under a red blanket. It is assumed accused Sanjay had entered the seminar hall after that, police said.
When her body was discovered the next morning, her mask was found a little away, a closed laptop near her head, and a diary and her mobile on top of the laptop. A plastic water bottle was found overturned near her head.
The victim’s identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme court directives on cases related to sexual assault.
