BHOPAL: One of the six cubs born to a South African cheetah named Gamini died of spinal injuries at Kuno National Park on Monday.
The five-month-old female fell from a tree while playing and was fatally injured, say sources. Kuno is now home to 25 cheetahs, including a dozen cubs.
Around 6.30pm on Sunday, Kuno monitoring staff noticed that one of Gamini’s cubs was unable to lift its hind portion and was dragging its legs, park officials said.
The cub was immediately taken to hospital, where examinations revealed a fractured vertebral column. Despite receiving intensive treatment, the cub’s condition worsened, and it died on Sunday morning. The exact cause of death will be determined after an autopsy, said officials.
The remaining cheetahs in the park are healthy, officials said, adding that preventive treatments for ticks and other parasitic infections have been administered. Regular monitoring continues.
In March, Union environment minister Bhupendra Yadav announced that cheetah Gamini had given birth to six cubs at Kuno. “Gamini’s legacy leaps forward,” Yadav had posted on X, sharing pictures and videos of the adorable six cubs.
Gamini’s litter was the fourth on Indian soil and the first by a cheetah brought from South Africa. In Jan this year, Namibian cheetah Jwala had given birth to three cubs in its second litter, having previously delivered four cubs, of which only one survived. Cheetah Aasha had added three cubs to the Kuno family.
Since the first batch of cheetahs was translocated from Namibia in September 2022 and released into enclosures by PM Narendra Modi, ten cheetahs have died.
