I don’t need a reason to eat a hot dog, but today is a very special day that I will definitely be celebrating! It’s National Hot Dog Day!
One of my best friends, Mercedez Varble, is also a fellow hot dog lover, so for the past few years we have celebrated with a gals glizzy night. The tradition has been big ole beef franks and ice cold beers from Brasher’s Lil’ Nashville. We listen to some awesome music, run into great friends, and get our buns a-dancin’.
Actually, the first year we ever celebrated there, Mercy was so committed to her Boot Scootin’ Boogie dance, she split her britches down the back! It was HILARIOUS. She creeped along the wall hiding her rear while I went and found her another pair in her car.
This year, while we definitely will be partaking in Brasher Dogs, I was thinking we could hit up somewhere new for a little Pup-petizer. A warm-up weiner if you will. So, I asked my friends where they like to go when they just are craving a hot dog. Like the infamous scene from Legally Blonde 2.
Here is a list of everyone’s favorite hot dog spots in the Owensboro area. Check out our official Weiner Meter at the end of the list and cast your vote!
1. Sonic Drive-In
2. Sam’s Club
3. Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers
4. Five Guys Burgers & Fries *pro-tip they will slice them in half before putting them on the griddle so they get nice a crispy!
5. Dairy Queen
6. Big Dipper! *pro-tip gotta get your dog as a Pig-in-a-Blanket here! Wrapped in bacon and filled with cheese. SO GOOD.
7. Carnival Cafe on Scherm Rd. in Owensboro, KY
8. Brasher’s Lil’ Nashville 2nd St. Downtown Owensboro, KY
9. The Owensboro Convention Center
10. The Back 9 Golf Club in Santa Claus, IN
I may have saved two of the best for last. I haven’t tried either yet, so I can’t make any promises, but just have a feeling! I plan to check them out ASAP. They are both local food trucks that set up around town so I’ll link their Facebook pages. That way you can follow them to see where they will be if you get a craving for something delicious.
11. Jazzy D’s Smokin’ Ribs sells all kinds of mouth-watering meats including an all-beef hotdog! You can find them at Friday After Five every week and you can catch them set up at the Get Go Express next to the Midtown Building on the corner of 9th and Frederica.
12. Dog-Gon-It Hot Dog & Lemonade Cart deep fries their dogs for a perfect crispy frank with piled high toppings. They serve up all kinds of creative options like the Fiesta Frank with Mexican corn, Mac Daddy with mac & cheese, Chili dogs, BBQ dogs, and more. They will be posted up in front of HIS Church behind the McDonald’s on South Frederica tonight from 5PM to 9PM so you can celebrate the holiday.
Is your favorite on the list, or are you one of those weirdos like my co-host Chad who doesn’t even like hot dogs? Chime in on our Weiner Meter Poll here for science!
